The Bernard Grau-Académie des beaux-arts Foundation

Created in 2022, the Foundation aims to support Cuban artists while paying tribute to Bernard Grau (1949-2020), a French diplomat who ended his career as Counsellor for Cooperation and Cultural Action in Havana.

A graduate in philosophy and law from the University of Montpellier, France, where he was also head of teaching in the departments of international law, sociology of international relations and public liberties, he held various posts in the French Chancellery, including that of Regional Cooperation Counsellor for Central America, from 2001 to 2005, based in the Costa Rican capital. He was director of the French Institute in Seville and cultural adviser in several Latin American countries (Uruguay, Peru, Cuba).

L' Académie des beaux-arts

The Académie des Beaux-Arts is one of the five academies that make up the Institut de France. Bringing together 67 members, 16 associate members from abroad and 67 correspondents, it oversees the defence of France's cultural heritage and encourages artistic creation in all its forms of expression by organising competitions, awarding prizes, funding artists' residencies and granting subsidies for artistic projects and events.

As a consultative body to the public authorities, the Académie also conducts an activity of reflection on artistic issues.

In order to carry out these missions, the Académie des Beaux-Arts manages its assets, which are made up of donations and legacies, as well as major cultural sites such as the Musée Marmottan Monet (Paris), the Villa and the Bibliothèque Marmottan (Boulogne-Billancourt), the House and gardens of Claude Monet (Giverny), the Villa and gardens of Ephrussi de Rothschild (Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat), the Villa Dufraine (Chars), the Maison-atelier Lurçat (Paris), the Appartement d'Auguste Perret (Paris) and the Galerie Vivienne (Paris), of which it is co-owner.

The Cité internationale des arts

The Cité internationale des arts is an artists' residence in the heart of Paris that brings together artists to work on a creative or research project in all disciplines.

For periods of two months to a year, the Cité internationale des arts gives artists the opportunity to work in an environment conducive to creation, open to encounters with professionals from the cultural world. Residents receive personalised support from the Cité internationale des arts team.

In the Marais or in Montmartre, the studio accommodation (living and creative space) available to the residents enables them to live alongside more than 300 artists and players in the art world of all generations, nationalities and disciplines. In collaboration with its many partners, the Cité internationale des arts opens several calls for thematic and/or project-based applications throughout the year.

The Fondation Bernard Grau-Académie des beaux-arts x Cité internationale des arts residency programme is open to composers and choreographers:

• Cuban nationals

• over 25 years of age

• living in Cuba or abroad

• with at least 5 years' professional artistic experience

Applicants who have benefited from a residency/grant in France for more than 4 weeks in the last 5 years are not eligible.

Applications from artists who have already benefited from a residency at the Cité internationale des arts will not be given priority.

Group applications (duo, couple, collective) are accepted and will result in the allocation of a single studio/accommodation, the payment of travel expenses for one person and the payment of a living grant and a single production grant during the residency period.

For choreographers:

• a copy of a valid passport, page with photo and identity information (PDF format)

• a full curriculum vitae (maximum 4 pages), in French or English (PDF format)

• a letter of intent of no more than 2 pages, written in French (PDF format), explaining the reasons for the applicant's approach and interest in participating in the residency programme. They will have to justify why their current research justifies the need for this residency in Paris, at the Académie des Beaux-Arts and at the Cité Internationale des Arts, from the point of view of their writing, their career and their professional network. A duo project with a composer is eligible

• an artistic dossier in French or English (PDF format) including video recordings in MP4 or AVI format (3 maximum) and/or links to video sites.

For composers:

• a copy of a valid passport, page with photo and identity information (PDF format)

• a full curriculum vitae (maximum 4 pages), in French or English (PDF format)

• a letter of intent of no more than 2 pages, written in French (PDF format), explaining the reasons for the applicant's approach and interest in participating in the residency programme. They must justify why their current research justifies the need for this residency in Paris, at the Académie des Beaux-Arts and at the Cité Internationale des Arts, in terms of their writing, career and professional network. The research may involve an original composition for a work, a film score, a ballet or a play. A duo project with a choreographer is eligible.

• a presentation file in French or English including a catalogue of works already composed (PDF format), which may include video files (MP4, AVI) and/or links to video sites. For operas, the dossier must include the libretto, synopsis or argument of the work.

• two sound recordings of the work (MP3) and their scores (PDF).

The applications will be examined by a multidisciplinary jury made up of members and correspondents of the Académie des Beaux-Arts belonging to the section being honoured, representatives of the Cité Internationale des Arts and invited outsiders. The jury will be chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.

In addition to assessing the candidate's professional background, the members of the jury will pay particular attention to :

• the artistic quality of the project

• the arguments presented on the added value of the prospect of a residency in Paris

• the proposed working protocol and any contacts or partnerships already established.

How do I apply if a project involves a composer and a choreographer?

Candidates must submit a separate application, one for choreography and one for musical composition, indicating that it is a collaborative project.

In the case of a single group application (duo, couple, collective), this will result in the allocation of a single studio apartment, the payment of travel expenses for one person, and the payment of one living allowance and one production grant during the residency period.
